Do You Need New Carpet?

carpet bedroom

There comes a time for every homeowner where you have to decide if you need new carpet or not or if you can care for and keep your current carpet. This is not an easy decision because new carpet is very expensive but you don’t want to live with carpet that does not look good anymore. After all, your carpet is in almost every room of your home.

Here are some things to consider to help you decide if you need new carpet:

How old is the carpet? If you have had the carpet in your home for more than 10 years, it is more likely it is time to purchase and install new carpet. The consensus from most carpet manufacturers is that a carpet should last about 10 years. After that, you will start to see irreversible signs of wear on the carpet.

You can extend the lifetime of your carpet if you schedule professional carpet cleaning every year. The professionals at chemdryofsnowyrange.com recommend you schedule services every 6-12 months for the best results and the best chance of maintaining the quality of your carpet for as long as possible.

You can also delay the deterioration of carpet if you use rug runners and area rugs to reduce some of the traffic directly on the carpet. Place the rugs in front of furniture or in traffic paths. You should also rearrange the furniture in carpeted rooms. This will create new traffic paths and reduce the wear from traffic in some spots of the room.

Another sign you might need new carpet is if you see bubbling or ripples and hills appearing in the middle of wall-to-wall carpet. Sometimes bubbles appear immediately after installation. This is an indication of improper installation. But if the bubbles appear several years after the carpet was installed, it indicates that the carpet pad beneath the carpet is wearing down. You cannot restore a carpet pad. You need to replace it along with the carpet.

Manufacturers recommend purchasing a high-quality pad when you purchase new carpet. The pad is one the main reasons carpet wears down too fast. A good carpet pad can repel stains and odors and help retain the resiliency of the carpet above.

The last thing to consider is stains on the surface of the carpet. Professional cleaning companies can remove newer stains and most common liquids from carpet but the longer a stain is on a carpet the harder it becomes to remove.

If you have old stains that have been on your carpet for years, it is relatively unlikely that a professional will be able to remove them entirely. If old, unsightly stains are everywhere on your carpet, you will want to consider purchasing some new carpet for a fresh new look.

Homeowners that live with pets and children will want to factor this into their decision. Even if you feel you need new carpet, you might want to hold off until your dog is housetrained or until your children are older and more responsible. It would be disappointing to install new carpet and then have a dog or child have an accident on it soon after. Pet urine stains in particular are extremely bad for carpet.

You should take your time making this decision. New carpet is a big investment for homeowners. We recommend calling a professional carpet cleaner to assess your carpet first. They will let you know if the stains can be removed or if the wear is irreversible or not. If the company can remove the stains or renew the look of the carpet, you will save yourself thousands of dollars in the process.

How to Install a Kitchen Backsplash

kitchen backsplash

You can update the look of your kitchen with a new backsplash. This design trend is very modern and sophisticated and popular in 2017. The good new is that it is pretty easy to install a kitchen backsplash and we can tell you just how to do it!

There are many colors and styles of backsplash to choose from. Two of the most popular styles are white or gray subway tile and mosaic tiles arranged in various shades of colors.

One of the reasons that installing a backsplash in your kitchen is so easy is because you can layer the backsplash directly over drywall. This avoids the need for any major reconstruction of the wall or your kitchen. This is an easy aesthetic project that makes a huge difference in the style of your kitchen.

To prepare for the installation, turn off all of the power in your kitchen. This is so you can safely remove the electrical outlet covers on outlets in the area you will be installing the backsplash. You should also tape over the outlets to protect them during the project.

Be sure to tape underneath the countertops and along the top of the countertop too. You can lay down a protective sheet of plastic over your countertop as well to ensure it isn’t damaged at all during the installation.

Slide out your stove, dishwasher and other appliances that the backsplash will need to be installed behind or above.

Then you should wipe down your drywall to ensure it is 100% clean and smooth. Glossy walls will need to be sanded to create a smooth surface for the backsplash tiles.

You should also use a level to ensure the wall is flat. You will need to use joint compound to flatten and smooth out any surfaces that are uneven. You don’t want the backsplash tile to be uneven after it is installed.

Now you can plan the layout of the backsplash. Tile backsplash needs a 1/8 inch expansion gap around the perimeter. Some patterns look best if they are centered.

Find your center and mark a vertical line. Use the line as a reference point and dry lay the tiles along the wall for an idea of what the design will look like when complete. You should check both the horizontal and vertical layout to ensure the size of the tiles on the end are as big or small as you want them to be in your design. The excess will need to be cut off of the exterior tiles.

You want the cut pieces of tile to be on the edges, just below the cabinets or just above the countertop if the countertop is uneven at all. You can use a level again to test if the countertop is even or not.

You will need to continue to adjust the layout of the tiles until the appearance is exactly how you want it. This includes the length and width of exterior and cut tiles and how even the surfaces around the backsplash are.

Once the layout is correct it is time to install. Mix thinset ceramic tile mortar following the directions. The consistency should be similar to peanut butter. You should purchase white ceramic tile mortar if possible so that it isn’t noticeable under glass tiles or lighter color patterns.

Spread the ceramic tile mortar on the drywall in an even fashion using a trowel. Be sure to trowel correctly. Once the mortar is applied correctly you can start placing the backsplash tiles against it. You should push the tiles on the thinset and twist to ensure they’re firmly in place.

Add one set of tiles at a time and continue in small sections. Continue to pause periodically to double check the layout and ensure all surfaces and patterns are level. Don’t forget about the 1/8th inch gap either.

Let the mortar dry for 24 hours or more after the installation is complete. You can use adhesive paper instead of mortar if you are more comfortable with it. The process is similar but you do not need to wait 24 hours since the paper is ready for immediate use.

Now mix the grout for the tiles in a cake batter consistency. Apply the grout over the tiles in a diagonal motion. Let the grout dry according to the instructions on the product label. Then apply grout sealant to finish the installation.

Now you can replace your appliances and outlet covers and turn on the power in your kitchen again. The project is complete.

Congratulations on your new kitchen backsplash!

Poor preparation

In painting a house, preparation is very important for it to be successful. You may regret later if you fail to prepare adequately. Ensure you remove any loose paint and scrap all spots that look blistered. Remove the outlet and switch cover prior.

Picking the wrong type of paint

Picking the right paint for your home is essential for you to get the quality results. You need a latex paint for your wall if it was initially coated by latex paint. If it has an oil-based paint, choose an oil-based paint for this painting. You should ask for information from a professional on what you need to use if you’re in doubt.

Insufficient cleaning

You should never attempt interior home painting before having cleaned the wall thoroughly. You can use pressure washers to ensure the wall is clean. Failure to clean the wall, you’ll notice dust particles or hair stuck to the walls after painting. Remember to give it time to dry completely before applying the paint.

Not using the painter’s tape

When painting your wall, you need to invest in a painter’s tape and not any other type of tape. Taping will ensure that you have clean edges and a finish that is polished. Seal the tape tightly around windows and baseboards. Remember to remove the tape before the paint dries completely to avoid peeling off the paint.

Improper ladder choice

Choosing the wrong ladder could mean risking damaging your home and even injuring yourself. The ladder could be too short to enable you to finish your painting in the standard manner. The ladder could also put dents in your wall if it has sharp tips. Ensure the ladder you choose on can make you finish the job efficiently without causing any damage or injuries to you. Here are the types of ladders to choose from.

Not asking experts.

It is in your best interest to contact professionals for advice before doing the painting. You could be lacking knowledge of the necessary tools and even the products needed. You need to hire some professionals to help you in the painting.
